Cannabis: The Long & Short Term Effects

I remember studying drugs and medications in my neuroscience class in college. I thought what many students and the population think about the effects cannabis might have on someone, especially over long-term use. I always thought cannabis was surely harmless.

But in studying the research, experts have demonstrated the effects of several different studies and the outcomes are usually consistent with their findings. Research explicitly tells us that there are negative effects over long-term use and it may depend on the individual and circumstances of their condition in how those effects cause damage to each person.

What People Think & Say About Cannabis

When people talk about marijuana, they rarely mention any negative effects arguing that the drug is virtually harmless. But, this is not true and science repeatedly reports their findings. People choose to ignore the truth. But over time, they may even subject themselves to other drugs that are more potent because the effects become less effective in their bodies.

However, I do not judge anyone’s decision to use marijuana, but I want people to be aware of the truth, not the hype of it becoming legalized in so many places. You deserve to have the best information and apply it to taking care of yourself.

But, the truth is that cannabis could be harmful to you over time. With that said, here is a list of both the short-term and the long-term effects of cannabis, provided by authorities in research:

Short-Term Effects

  • Memory problems
  • Anxiety, including episodes of paranoia
  • Abnormal behavior, hearing or seeing things that are not really there
  • Panic
  • Hallucinations
  • Reduced reaction time
  • Increased risk of stroke and heart attack
  • Coordination problems
  • Sexual problems (men)
  • At risk for sexually transmitted diseases than non-users (women)
  • Identity Issues

Long-Term Effects

  • Decline in IQ
  • Decline in school performance
  • At risk of being a drop-out in school
  • Impaired thinking
  • Lessened life accomplishment
  • At risk for addiction to other substances
  • Marriage and relationship issues
  • Domestic abuse
  • Antisocial
  • Financial or gambling Issues
  • At risk for welfare dependence
  • Reduced chances of employment and excelling in achievements

What Is At Risk?

We have to remember that any kind of substance, no matter if it seems harmless or not, it is still a drug. And drugs unregulated can be harmful especially if the person does not definitively know what it consists of and how much they should be consuming as directed by a professional. At least, this is what the experts tell us over and over again in their reports.

They also tell us that anyone who takes any kind of drug is at risk for going on to other drugs that are more hard-core and this thought presents an array of effects that could be potentially harmful to one’s body.

It’s Your Future-Guard It With Care

You have your future in front of you. Protect it wisely. This information is not provided for you to be scared; but, it is provided to inform, inspire, and guide you to a profound life that you are capable of having.
