What is Spirituality & Can It Be Defined?

Spirituality has different meanings to different people. And most everyone would like to think of themselves as a spiritual person. But, it is my belief that not many can really define it in its authentic meaning. Or more likely, it means something different that is tailored to each individual’s purpose.

Concept of The Spiritual Life

The concept of Spirituality is not to be designed to one’s own liking. It has a distinct meaning; e.g., one of the best definitions comes to us through ancient religion, “Christianity”. For example, in the real world, a true definition of spirituality according to the Catholic Church says, “Basically, this term signifies an itinerary for growth in our friendship with Christ” (Fr. John Bartunek, LC, 2011). I think most Christians around the world would agree with this definition since there is a shared belief in the faith-belief realm.

Our Journey of Spirituality

The ongoing journey of spirituality is focused on a more intense and profound holiness, which becomes deeply rooted and intertwined in a close relationship with God. This focus or journey of spirituality that is achieved in the close relationship with God comes about by the purification of one’s intellect as well as their will, which is joined in unison within the will of God.

The Psychological View

According to psychology research, humans need love, want to be loved, and have a rich desire to live in a world of love; however, the reality of life and experience tells one that we are never completely satisfied as we continue throughout life; for instance, being unfulfilled is a yearning for more (Bradley, 2005). That yearning for more in our lives comes from the material quests we strive to accumulate thinking that they will satisfy us; on the contrary, after the lure wears off, we find ourselves looking for the next attractive lure to level off the yearning that emerges once again.

The Answer To the Insatiable Yearning We Cultivate

The insatiable desire for something more can only be found in one’s need for God. As Christians and Catholics believe and understand, this source of refreshment or “pure water” comes to us as a gift to the thirsty (yearning) and to those who seek more on a human level.

But Some People Do Not Believe in Religion

Sometimes “spirituality and religion” are equated in their mission or benefits. They can be equated for Christians but for others who want no part of religion, I think an important idea is to recognize that there is something greater than oneself and to seek it or Him and to do it with love and truth. In other words, living in authentic goodness and ethical ways that support the good of not only self but, are inclusive of society on a global basis, is a healthy approach to seeking one’s spiritual path.

Some people do not believe in God. For those who do not believe in God, a Higher Power or Something Greater than oneself, it could be that maybe you are not seeking a source of higher belief or truth. You may depend strictly on yourself for everything. It is true, one has the gift of free will and is able to make their choices and decisions every moment.

However, I depend on myself too. If not me, who then, right?

• But I do not depend on myself 100%. Because if I did and when I do, it never comes out perfectly. Well, nothing is ever really perfect but when I ask for help from above, I seem to do much better. I do not question it…I just believe.

• But basically, my readers and friends, let’s hope that one lives a righteous life, is kind, compassionate and helps others, no matter what he/she believes.

• So, I think it is fair to admit that based on all the literature and research pointing to the minds and hearts of humans, that there is an insatiable need and desire to quench one’s thirst for life and living. Sometimes this need leaves us feeling unfulfilled. Remembering that spirituality is not the same as “a guru’s latest fad definition”.

It is something more than earthly fulfillments or possessions. It is something greater, as it has existed with the Christians for quite some time. It is a striving for a unique fulfillment of being touched by the grace of God and living according to His generous intentions for us.

Again, for those who do not believe in God, it should be sought as a desire to grow, unite, and enrich one’s life in giving for the betterment of society and humankind.

A Final Thought On Spirituality

• No matter how you look at the universe and all around it, I am in agreement with some of the great philosophers and theologians. It did not come to us or form on its own without the help of a greater being. It is much too complex for any human to fully understand it.

Moreover, in the struggles of life, our hope and our desires manifest themselves in the earthly pleasures; but the reality is that humans are much more than a material object…they are loved and valued or they would not even exist.

• I wish you well on your quest for “spiritual growth” because I believe that in this realm, you will truly find a form of happiness, which cannot be taken away from you by any other human or thing in this entire world.
